cyberSAFE Webinar Series Recap: Looking for a Cure for Medical Identity Theft

By | October 21st, 2014|Uncategorized|

Medical ID Theft InfographicWhile stories about large-scale financial and retail breaches are making headlines on a regular basis, it is medical identity theft that should be taking center stage. Why? In 2013, the healthcare industry experienced more data breaches than ever before, accounting for 43% of all breaches that year.

In the most recent edition of our cyberSAFE webinar series, Ann Patterson of Medical Identity Fraud Association (MIFA) and Dr. Marie-Helen Maras of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, along with CSID’s own Bryan Hjelm, discussed the latest on this topic.

They addressed the trends in medical identity theft, implications for healthcare organizations and patients, and provided recommendations for how the industry – as well as consumers – can make secure changes moving forward. The panelists also took a look at CSID’s findings from our recent survey of healthcare organizations. Watch a recording of the webinar below and read our whitepaper for survey findings and analysis.

Our survey found that most small healthcare facilities are unprepared for data breach. While healthcare breaches are on the rise, most small healthcare facilities feel that their systems adequately limit the risk of a data breach – yet one in three facilities spends less than 10% of their IT budget on protecting patient data, and less than a third (28.6%) have a crisis plan in place in the event of a breach. To better protect patient data and secure their systems, healthcare facilities of all sizes should focus on the following:

  • Educate employees and partners
  • Install and maintain anti-virus software
  • Track, encrypt and password-protect mobile devices with access to patient data
  • Audit and vet third party vendors that will have access to patient data
  • Implement multi-factor authentication requirements across the organization

We encourage you to check out the corresponding infographic, watch the webinar recording below and read the whitepaper. cyberSAFE Webinar Series: Looking for a Cure for Medical Identity Theft

By | September 17th, 2014|Uncategorized|

Small Biz WebinarOur cyberSAFE series is back with another free webinar: join us October 21, 2014 at 12 PM CT to discuss medical identity theft and the rapidly approaching Electronic Medical Records Mandate.

Register Now

Many consumers are unaware of medical identity theft and the harm it can cause – both to their wallet and their health – yet this is the fastest growing segment of identity theft in the United States. The Identity Theft Resource Center found that breaches of medical records with PII accounted for 43 percent of all PII breaches in 2013. In addition, Ponemon Research reported that 90 percent of healthcare organizations have exposed their patients’ data or had it stolen in 2012 and 2013, and the industry has seen more than 200 breach incidents in 2014 alone.

In our upcoming cyberSAFE webinar, medical fraud experts will address the growing problem of medical identity theft and related topics, including: Electronic Medical Records and the threats consumers and businesses face; how medical identity theft happens and what happens to an identity once it is stolen; the impact of medical identity theft on businesses and consumers; and what solutions businesses and consumers can implement to prevent and mitigate the impact of medical identity theft.

We have pulled together an excellent group of experts for the discussion, including Ann Patterson, SVP and Program Director of the Medical Identity Fraud Alliance, and Dr. Marie-Helen Maras, Associate Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Additional panelists will be announced soon.

Join us for this free one-hour webinar on October 21 at 12 pm CT. If you are a business owner, healthcare professional, IT professional, or even someone who has ever been to the doctor – we encourage you to sign up, listen in and ask questions.

cyberSAFE Webinar Series Recap: SMB Security for Every Phase of Growth

By | June 10th, 2014|Uncategorized|

CS_Infographic_SMB2014_FINALweb3Small businesses are in a tough position when it comes to cyber security. They face a growing number of threats and attention by cyber criminals and don’t have the time or resources that larger enterprises have to devote to cyber security. As instances of data theft, malware and other risks grow, it is going to become increasingly important for small businesses to be aware of the threats they face and learn how to address them effectively and with limited resources.

This is the topic that Byron Acohido, The Last Watchdog and The Securitist, Aaron Hanson, Symantec and CSID’s own Bryan Hjelm tackled in our most recent installment of our cybeSAFE webinar series.

Panelists took an in-depth look at the different threats SMBs face in different phases of growth and provided solutions for how best to tackle them. You can watch a recording of the webinar when available below. The group also summarized findings from CSID’s most recent SMB survey.

This year’s SMB survey found that there is a disconnect between awareness and action when it comes to SMB security. In the survey 63 percent of small businesses reported that they are worried about undetected malware, 38 percent are worried about phishing attacks and 41 percent are concerned about breaches causes by human error. Despite these worries, 31 percent of responding businesses are still not doing anything to protect against these threats.

To bridge this gap, SMBs need to focus on the security basics:

  • Awareness – Know and understand the threats that can impact your business.
  • Education – Educate employees on the importance of workplace security and choose vendors with superior security reputations. The more well-educated your workforce is on the importance of security, the more likely they will be to employ better online habits at work and in their personal lives.
  • Monitoring – Take advantage of software solutions that can help monitor the security of your business. Anti-virus solutions can help protect against malicious malware and VPNs can help secure business data when conducting business outside of the company network.
  • Damage Control – Have a breach preparedness plan. While a plan may not reduce the cost of repairing a data breach, it certainly helps keep your customer relationships intact and reduces business reputation damage.

If you have any questions about SMB security, we encourage you to check out the resources linked to on this page and our corresponding infographic. You can also reach out to us via Twitter and Facebook. Find out more about CSID’s cyberSAFE webinar series and watch previous recordings.

cyberSAFE Webinar Series is Back: SMB Security Solutions for Every Stage of Growth

By | May 12th, 2014|Uncategorized|

Small Biz WebinarOur CSID cyberSAFE series is back with another great webinar: June 10 at 12 pm CT on SMB security.

Register Now

As a small business owner, your security needs are constantly changing as your business grows. When starting a business, security risks are tied closely to your personal and business credit. As the size and scope of your business increases, other risk factors are introduced: security vulnerabilities exposed by employees, such as the reuse of login credentials, mismanaged data or falling prey to malware downloads; third-party vendor breaches, which can provide unsecured access to your systems; and the challenge of securely storing customer data. Lapses related to these vulnerabilities can impact a business’ finances and reputation on a grand scale.

The question is: how do you manage all of these risks while taking into consideration the limited resources and time that small business owners have? We have pulled together a stellar group of SMB security experts to discuss and answer this question, including Byron Acohido, author of The Last Watchdog and The Securitist, Aaron Hanson, Senior Manager and Regional Product Marketing at Symantec, and Bryan Hjelm, VP of Product and Marketing at CSID.

Join us for this free one-hour webinar on June 10 at 12 pm CT. If you are a small business owner, aspiring entrepreneur or IT guy, we encourage you to sign up, listen in and ask questions. For more information, visit the webinar registration page.

Also, join conversations about the webinar on social media using the hashtag, #cyberSAFE.

#cyberSAFEChat: Child ID Theft and Privacy

By | April 10th, 2014|Uncategorized|

Last year we polled parents on their feelings and actions towards child identity theft. The results? Most were not taking measures to protect their children against identity theft risks. Recently, we heard from parents and businesses with more questions and interest surrounding this topic. To address these questions, we hosted a #cyberSAFEchat Twitter chat coupled with a replay of our 2013 webinar on child identity theft and privacy. The onslaught of interest and information shared during the Twitter chat showed just how relevant the topic still is in today’s digital world.

Clay Nichols from LookOut Social and Anne Livingston from KidsPrivacy co-hosted our #cyberSAFEchat this week, answering questions and providing expert advice on child identity theft prevention. We had a wonderful group of participants, including the National Cyber Security Alliance, Ginger Hill from Security Today Magazine, Social Assurity and Data Privacy Day. This brilliant group of security and child privacy experts shared tips, resources and facts about the realities and risks parents face when it comes to protecting their child’s identity. Below are some key highlights from our #cyberSAFEchat or you can read the entire chat transcript on our Storify.

September Recap: It All Comes Down To This

By | October 2nd, 2013|Uncategorized|

With summer officially over, September found us keeping our noses to the grindstone here at CSID. A large portion of September was spent thinking and talking about online reputation management as we prepped for our quarterly CSID cyberSAFE webinar. It all came down to September 24th, when we hosted the webinar with three very cool panelists (more on that below). But it wasn’t all about work and webinars in September. We also made time for a little fun. Take a look at what we were up to this September:

cyberSAFE Webinar Series: Online Reputation Management

On the 24th we held a cyberSAFE webinar on “Managing Online Reputation.” We enjoyed the enthusiastic discussion among our panelists: Parry Aftab from Wired Safety, HR consultant and writer Jessica Miller-Merrell, professor of law at Washington University St. Louis Neil Richards, and CSID’s own Bryan Hjelm, VP of Product and Marketing. Read a recap of the webinar discussion or watch it anytime on-demand.

Stemming from that webinar – we also released a corresponding whitepaper and infographic on the topic. Check it out on our blog and feel free to share!

Hosted #cyberSAFEchat with Security Today Magazine

Prior to our webinar, we got together with Ginger Hill, a reporter with Security Today Magazine, to host a Twitter chat about online reputation management. Joined by other industry experts, we discussed how employees’ personal social media use can impact their employers’ businesses reputation and security. Find great tips and takeaways from this chat in our recap.

More from Joe Ross on Huffington Post

CSID President Joe Ross contributed another piece to the Huffington Post: “How to Prevent Child Identity Theft Part Two: What Businesses Can Do.” Take a look and let us know if you have additional tips to share.

Cookie picHosted Austin Technology Council Happy Hour

Our Austin office hosted this month’s Austin Technology Council (ATC) happy hour, catered by our favorite food truck in the city, Valentino’s, and complete with CSID-branded cookies. We enjoyed conversations from the ATC, CSID president Joe Ross, as well as a particularly engaging talk about cybersecurity from our Chief Innovation Officer Adam Tyler. It was great to see so many new and familiar faces. Thanks for joining us!
